Midwest Crossword Tournament Code of Conduct
In order to ensure that the Midwest Crossword Tournament is a safe and welcoming environment, we put forth the following Code of Conduct for all of our attendees.
1. Harassment will not be tolerated. This includes but is not limited to: any kind of physical, verbal, or psychological abuse, threats, intimidation, and bullying; discriminatory remarks of any kind; and unwanted romantic attention or sexual harassment.
2. Please be respectful of the space. Please clean up after yourself, leave everything as you found it, and do not bring drugs or alcohol onto the premises. You may bring light snacks and water into the room, but our host institution asks that you leave the room for full meals.
3. Be kind! If you’re a crossword tournament pro, do what you can to make the Midwest Crossword Tournament a welcoming environment for all solvers. If you’re a rookie, welcome! To all competitors, we hope you have a great time, and we hope to see you at many future crossword events!
4. If you see or experience a violation of the code of conduct, please find an organizer of the program (Shannon Rapp or Sally Hoelscher). If you cannot find one of these two organizers, talk to any official and have them find us.
5. If you violate the code of conduct, we reserve the right to ask you to leave the tournament without a refund.
COVID-19 Policies and Guidance
The tournament is held in a large, busy building with many indoor gathering spaces that are open to the public. Many of the people in the building on the day of the event will be UIC students and staff, including some who will be working our event such as AV support, facility maintenance, and catering staff. At the time of this writing (9/6/24), face masks are not required in campus buildings.
We will follow the guidelines of our host institution. UIC's live page on their COVID-19 guidance can be found here. In the event they update their policies at any time before the event, we expect tournament participants to adhere to any updated policies.
We support every individual's choice to protect themselves however they choose. We encourage eligible participants to receive the newest available COVID-19 booster and annual flu vaccination in advance of the tournament.
If you become unable to attend due to safety or health concerns, you may choose to switch to the online tournament through September 30. Cancellations may be made with full refund through September 30 by email to midwestcrossword@gmail.com
